Oral Cancer Screening
All adult patients are at risk for oral cancer
25% of oral cancers occur in people who don't smoke and have no other risk factors.
Patient Risk Profile:
Increased Risk: Patients age 18-39 without lifestyle risk factors
High Risk: Patients age 40 and older without lifestyle risk factors
Patients any age with lifestyle risk factors
Lifestyle risk factors inlcude tobacco use (any type), chronic alcohol use (2oz. at least 3x per week), HIV/HPV, sunlight exposure to lips, Gender (men twice as often as women), Race (more frequently in African Americans than in Caucasians)
Highest Risk: Patients age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors
Patients with history of oral cancer
When detected early, oral cancer is 90% curable and patients can live a healthy life. Yet a majority of lesions are not identified early with an unaided visual examination. Our office is now offering ViziLite Plus with TBlue, which is an early detection screening tool for oral cancer screening.
